Swami Haridas and Banke Bihari: the deity who appeared through music

Swami Haridas was a sixteenth-century saint and musician, held in great respect in the devotional music tradition. He practised in Nidhivan in Vrindavan.

The tradition says that, pleased with his singing, Radha and Krishna appeared to him as a pair. At the request of his disciples he prayed, and the two appeared united in a single form. That deity is Thakur Banke Bihari. "Banke" means bent, the tribhanga posture, and "Bihari" means one who plays in leela.

Folk tradition also says musicians as great as Tansen were his disciples. That is not historically certain, but the people of Braj say it. These stories belong to devotion; they are not offered as historical proof.
