Braj Mandal means the whole region of Krishna's leelas around Mathura and Vrindavan. Tradition puts its extent at 84 kos. If a kos is taken as about two to two and a half kilometres, the whole route comes to something like 200 to 250 km, though the figure is debated.
The parikrama passes Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Gokul, Barsana, Nandgaon and many villages, kunds and groves. Traditionally it took weeks on foot. These days many go by vehicle with a group over a few days.
Think first
- Choose a stretch that suits your health; if you cannot do all of it, do a part.
- Carry walking shoes, water and basic medicines.
- October to March has the most comfortable weather.
- Find out about lodging beforehand, since not every village has a hotel.
