Akshaya Tritiya and chandan seva: caring for the deity in summer

The bright third of the month of Vaishakha is Akshaya Tritiya. "Akshaya" means that which does not decay. So starting something new, giving in charity or buying something on this day is held auspicious.

Braj is very hot at this time. In summer the temples of Vrindavan apply sandalwood paste to the deity to keep him cool, which is called chandan seva or chandan yatra. Light white clothes, flower decoration and offerings of cooling drinks or fruit are part of summer seva too.

It is said that at Banke Bihari the deity's feet can be seen on this day. What exactly is arranged changes, so check the temple's announcement each year.

At home in summer, dress the deity in light cloth, put a little sandalwood on him, and offer water or a cool drink along with tulsi.
