Why people in Braj say ‘Radhe Radhe’
A simple introduction to the most familiar greeting of Mathura and Vrindavan, and when it is said.

In Mathura, Vrindavan or Barsana you will hear one greeting almost everywhere: “Radhe Radhe”. Shopkeepers, priests, rickshaw drivers and passers-by all say it as a way of saying namaste.
The feeling behind it
In many devotional traditions of Braj, Shri Radha is placed at the heart of devotion to Krishna. That is why her name is often spoken first, as in “Radha-Krishna”. When people say “Radhe Radhe” they are giving the other person a small devotional blessing of goodwill.
When it is said
On meeting, on parting, to say thank you, and even when answering the phone. There is no fixed rule. If someone greets you this way, you can answer in the same words.
What you can do
When you are in Braj, say it from the heart; that is enough. Do not worry about pronunciation. If you do not know it, nobody minds, and people are usually glad that you tried.
